Toolbox Talks

In the construction industry, a toolbox talk is a short safety message used to address hazards, share best practices, and reinforce safety requirements prior to employees beginning their workday. These toolbox talks take place in the field and can be as short as five or ten minutes long.

What is a SWMS?

SWMS is short for Safe Work Method Statement. It is an important tool to help supervisors and workers confirm and monitor the control measures required around High Risk Construction Work Activities (HRCW).

A SWMS document sets out your proposed high risk construction activities in logical sequences, identifies the hazards and describes your control measures to minimise safety risks.

What is meant by High Risk Construction Work (HRCW) ?

High Risk Construction Work (HRCW) is defined by each state OHS/WHS regulations. A SWMS is to be completed for all tasks deemed as HRCW.

Why do I need a SWMS?

Employers have a legal duty under the OHS/WHS regulations to prepare and monitor a SWMS for any HRCW activities they are intending on completing.

SWMS are a key planning tool in assisting supervisors and workers to develop, implement and monitor control measures for all construction work to be carried out safely.
